Coffee Grinder Jams: Causes, Safe
A grinder jam occurs when the motor or burrs cannot rotate normally or coffee cannot move through the grinding path. The cause may be a hard foreign object, compacted grounds, an excessively fine setting, a clogged chute, stalled motor, or beans wedged in the burrs.
First: stop and disconnect power
If an electric grinder hums, stalls, or stops abruptly, do not keep cycling the switch. Continued attempts can overheat the motor, damage a start capacitor, trip protection, or wedge the obstruction more tightly. Unplug the grinder before reaching near the burrs or chute.
Common causes
Small stones occasionally travel with coffee and can lock the burrs. Very fine settings can also cause a grinder to stall, especially if the adjustment is made finer while the chamber is full of beans. Oily coffee and accumulated fines can compact in the exit chute until grounds back up into the burr chamber.
How a jam is cleared
The correct procedure depends on grinder design. Many grinders should first be adjusted substantially coarser, then emptied and inspected. Some allow the upper burr or carrier to be removed for access. Never force an adjustment mechanism against trapped coffee, and never insert fingers or tools into a powered grinder.
Jam vs. chute clog
A grinder can still spin while failing to dispense grounds if the exit path is clogged. In that case the motor may sound normal but coffee accumulates internally. That condition needs chute cleaning rather than motor diagnosis.
Preventing future jams
Inspect beans for obvious foreign material, keep the grinder clean, avoid large fine-setting changes with stationary loaded burrs when the manufacturer recommends adjusting while running, and follow the grinder's rated duty cycle. If a machine repeatedly stalls under normal coffee load, it may need service rather than more cleaning.
