Note about water hardness
Using hard water will ruin your espresso machine. Soft water no higher than 50ppm is required to keep your espresso machine running for the long term. Using hard water will void the warranty.
Before purchasing the DM47, I used my TIMEMORE Chestnut C3S Pro Manual Coffee Grinder for all my coffee grinding. I make 72 ozs of cold brew per week with my AeroPress XL and hand-ground all the beans. After a lot of research, I chose the DM47 for the conical burrs to match the results of my TIMEMORE.
The DM47 was easy to dial in by comparing the grinds side by side. Retention is minimal as long as you use the bellow as you grind and mist your beans. Some beans will still stick, and you must have a brush or similar object to push the beans into the burs. The bar across the opening will hold some beans when pouring in 30 grams of beans, I have not had an issue with 15 grams. I turn the grinder on before dumping the beans in with a dosing cup.
Speed is excellent for my use and has cut my brewing time by half. The grinder is quiet. The cord with the transformer, due to being 12-volt compatible, can get in the way, but the cord is of sufficient length.
Clean up is easy except for the outer walls of the burrs, the section with the numbers, tens to retain ground coffee. It takes some time to clean them completely with a brush. The air puffer is ok, but does not move much air. The bellows do retain coffee grounds and are nearly impossible to clean totally.
The dosing cup will easily hold 30 grams of ground coffee.
I like it but it has a learning curve. The directions are a joke. Videos online helped some, but there needs to be a better one on dialing in the grind settings. It really is zero retention which will help a lot in not having to take it apart to clean it. Trying to get it back to your preferred grind is a trial in patience.
I like this grinder and I really enjoyed my coffee with the stock burrs.
Solidly built, compact, quiet, easy to clean, wonderful grind profile for pour over. I had high expectations that were exceeded on every point. If it disappeared I would immediately buy another
First let me state that I am just an average joe coffee drinker, I am not an espresso connoisseur and I'm not hung up on 'pulling shots' or taste testing different grinders. I use a Ninja drip coffee maker that somewhat emulates a pour-over setup, and when I'm traveling I use an Aeropress.
I have had a Baratza Encore grinder for quite some time which seems to be a favorite in the sub-$200 price bracket. My Encore is slow, loud and inconsistent. Some of this has to do with getting jammed up with grounds which don't want to exit and get stuck between the burr and the chute. This leads to a lot of inconsistency with the size of the grind. I'm not sure if I have a lemon or mine is broken, one of my buddies has one and it is not as loud or painfully slow as mine is.
So I was looking for a new grinder and came across this Turin. What an upgrade! Firstly this thing is built like a tank, it is solid aluminum, very heavy and solid. The low RPM motor is MUCH quieter than the Baratza and no joke this thing is at least 5 times faster. The grind adjustment dial is smooth and works well. I like the bellows and clacker, between these features and just the general design there is nowhere for grinds to accumulate and plug up.
Only negative is large power brick which is annoying on our counter.
