The LUCCA Solo is a compact, espresso-only machine for home baristas who want the temperature control and tactile workflow of an E61 group without paying for a steam system they will not use. It combines a single brew boiler, PID control, built-in shot timer, vibratory pump, commercial-standard 58mm group, and a 3-liter reservoir.

Best fit: straight-espresso and Americano drinkers who enjoy dialing in coffee manually. Because the Solo has no steam wand, it is not the right choice for households that regularly prepare cappuccinos, lattes, or other milk drinks.

Why choose an espresso-only machine?

A conventional single-boiler machine must switch between brew temperature and the higher temperature needed for steam. The Solo removes that transition entirely. Its boiler and controls remain focused on brewing, giving the user a simpler routine and a clean, compact machine without unused milk-steaming hardware.

  • PID temperature control: set the brew boiler around the needs of the coffee rather than relying only on a thermostat cycle.
  • Built-in shot timer: track extraction time without adding another timer to the counter.
  • 58mm E61 group: supports widely available commercial-size baskets, tampers, distribution tools, and bottomless portafilters.
  • Three-liter reservoir: no plumbing is required, making the machine practical for kitchens and coffee bars without a water line.
  • Compact footprint: suited to espresso stations where width and visual simplicity matter.

Daily workflow

  1. Allow the E61 group to heat thoroughly, not just until the PID first reaches the set temperature.
  2. Weigh the dose, distribute evenly, and tamp level in the 58mm basket.
  3. Use the shot timer with a scale under the cup to monitor time and beverage yield.
  4. Adjust grind size based on flow and taste; use temperature as a secondary recipe variable.
  5. Flush loose grounds from the group and clean the basket after each session.

For most coffees, begin with the roaster's recipe or a conventional brew ratio and adjust by taste. Lighter roasts often benefit from a slightly higher brew temperature or longer ratio, while darker roasts often respond better to a lower temperature and shorter ratio.

LUCCA Solo compared with common alternatives

Machine type Best for Tradeoff
LUCCA Solo espresso-only single boiler Espresso-focused users wanting PID and E61 workflow No milk steaming
Single boiler with steam wand Mostly espresso with an occasional milk drink Requires switching between brew and steam modes
Heat exchanger Frequent milk drinks and simultaneous workflow Larger, more complex, and less espresso-only focused
Dual boiler Independent brew and steam control Higher cost and more machine than an espresso purist may need

Water and ownership considerations

Use water that is safe for espresso equipment: neither scale-forming hard water nor corrosive, mineral-free water. Water chemistry affects taste, boiler life, valves, and warranty coverage. Backflush with water regularly, use espresso-machine detergent at the interval in the manual, and replace the group gasket and shower screen as normal wear items.

Pair the Solo with a capable espresso grinder. Browse our home espresso grinders, compare other home espresso machines, or view the complete LUCCA collection.

About LUCCA

Frequently asked questions

Can the LUCCA Solo steam milk?

No. It is intentionally designed as an espresso-only machine and does not include a steam wand.

Does it need to be plumbed in?

No. The Solo operates from its built-in 3-liter water reservoir.

How long should an E61 machine warm up?

The boiler reaches temperature before the large E61 group is fully heat saturated. Allow adequate warm-up time and verify temperature stability through your normal routine.

Is a grinder included?

No. Consistent espresso requires a separate grinder capable of fine, stepless adjustment.

Note about water hardness

Using hard water will ruin your espresso machine. Soft water no higher than 50ppm is required to keep your espresso machine running for the long term. Using hard water will void the warranty.

Great Service! It has been a few months since I purchased my machine, but I absolutely love it. Initially I had some issues with damage from shipping, but Joe took care of it immediately so there were no problems. He also stayed on the phone with me for a long time the day I received my machine so I could get everything working properly. I highly recommend!
