Turin Axis Lever Espresso Machine with PID and 58mm Portafilter

The Turin Axis is a compact manual lever espresso machine for baristas who want to control pre-infusion and pressure by hand rather than with a pump. Its long lever, pressure gauge and adjustable PID make extraction visible and tactile: you decide how gently to saturate the puck, how quickly to build pressure and how pressure declines through the shot.

A stainless steel brew path separates water and coffee from the machine’s aluminum structural components. The 58mm walnut-handled bottomless portafilter accepts a familiar commercial-size basket, while the included shot mirror helps reveal uneven flow or channeling.

Why Choose the Turin Axis?

Direct manual pressure control

The lever lets you shape pressure in real time. Apply a gentle pre-infusion, raise force as the puck saturates and ease off later in the extraction. The gauge provides feedback, but taste and repeatability remain the final tests.

Adjustable PID heating

PID control manages the electrically heated brew system. At a listed 180 watts, the Axis focuses its energy on the compact brew path rather than powering a steam boiler.

58mm bottomless portafilter

The included walnut-handled bottomless portafilter makes puck behavior visible. Spraying or uneven beading usually points toward distribution, tamping or grind problems that should be corrected before changing pressure technique.

Stainless water and coffee path

All listed water-contact and coffee-contact parts are food-grade SUS304 stainless steel. Aluminum parts are structural and do not store, heat or contact brewing water or coffee.

Compact base with tall lever travel

The base is about 14.5 inches long and 7.75 inches wide. Height is approximately 13 inches with the lever down and 29 inches with it raised, so overhead clearance matters more than counter width.

Manual Lever Espresso Workflow

  1. Preheat the machine, portafilter and cup according to the manual.
  2. Grind a measured dose into the basket, distribute carefully and tamp level.
  3. Add the puck screen if desired and lock in the bottomless portafilter.
  4. Use low lever force for controlled pre-infusion. Watch the basket and gauge for even saturation.
  5. Increase force smoothly for the main extraction, then allow pressure to taper near the target yield.
  6. Record dose, yield, temperature and pressure pattern, then change one variable at a time.

A lever machine rewards technique. Pressure is not a number to hold blindly: different coffees, ratios and flow rates may taste best under different profiles. The Axis provides the control to explore, but a precise grinder and consistent puck preparation are essential.

Axis vs. Pump Espresso Machines

Consideration Turin Axis Pump machine
Pressure Generated and shaped by the barista Generated by a pump
Milk steaming No steam system listed Common on semi-automatic machines
Workflow Hands-on and technique driven More automated pressure delivery
Best for Straight espresso and profiling Espresso plus milk-drink convenience

Who Is the Axis For?

Choose the Axis if straight espresso is the priority and you enjoy shaping extraction manually. It is especially useful for learning how pre-infusion, pressure and declining flow affect flavor. It is not the best choice when built-in milk steaming, push-button repeatability or low overhead clearance is essential.

Care and Safety

Manual lever systems store mechanical force and contain hot water. Follow the manual, keep hands clear of pinch points, stabilize the machine on a level counter and never disassemble a hot or pressurized group. Rinse coffee-contact parts after use, maintain piston seals as directed, and contact Espresso Outlet for service guidance.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the Turin Axis have a pump?

No. The barista supplies extraction force through the manual lever.

Does it steam milk?

No steam boiler or wand is listed. The Axis is designed primarily for espresso; use a separate milk frother for milk drinks.

How much lever clearance is needed?

The machine is approximately 29 inches tall with the lever raised. Measure under cabinets before ordering.

What size portafilter does it use?

It includes a 58mm walnut-handled bottomless portafilter and an 18g double basket.

Why use a bottomless portafilter?

It lets you observe extraction from the basket. Uneven beading or spraying can reveal puck-preparation problems.

What does the pressure gauge show?

It gives feedback on pressure created by lever force and puck resistance.

Can I control pre-infusion?

Yes. Apply gentle lever pressure to saturate the puck before increasing force.

Does water touch aluminum?

According to the listed construction, water- and coffee-contact parts are SUS304 stainless steel. Aluminum parts are structural.

What grinder should I use?

Use an espresso grinder with fine, repeatable adjustment. Lever technique cannot compensate for inconsistent particle size.

Is it good for beginners?

A motivated beginner can learn it, but it requires more technique than a pump machine. A scale and careful notes help.

What warranty is included?

A one-year Espresso Outlet warranty and support apply to Axis machines purchased from Espresso Outlet.

Is this the U.S. model?

Yes. This is the 120V, 180W U.S. model and ships to U.S. addresses only.

Note about water hardness

Using hard water will ruin your espresso machine. Soft water no higher than 50ppm is required to keep your espresso machine running for the long term. Using hard water will void the warranty.
