Royal Water-Process Decaf Coffee: Flavor, Origin and Brewing Guide

Royal Decaf combines light- and dark-roasted coffees to create a decaf that is bright enough for black coffee yet bold enough to remain present with milk. Thanksgiving Coffee Company sources the organic coffees from Central and South America and uses water-process decaffeination.

Why Blend Two Roast Levels?

Combining lighter and darker components gives the roaster separate tools for brightness and body. The lighter portion keeps the cup lively, while the darker portion contributes roast depth and enough intensity for cappuccinos or café au lait. The current source does not list individual countries, cultivars or processing methods, so those details are not assumed.

What to Expect in the Cup

Royal Decaf is designed around balance rather than a narrow tasting-note target. Expect the lighter component to lift the cup while the dark component adds body. Decaf coffee often extracts quickly; if the finish is dry or woody, grind coarser before changing several other variables.

Brewing Recommendations

  • Automatic drip: start around 60 grams per liter with a medium grind.
  • Espresso: begin near 1:2 and adjust grind carefully; it is designed to carry through milk.
  • French press: use a coarse grind around 1:15 for a fuller body.
  • Pour-over: use moderate agitation to preserve brightness without overextracting the dark component.

Use these recipes as starting points. Water chemistry, coffee age, grinder geometry and brewer design all affect extraction. Keep dose and water constant while changing grind size so each adjustment gives useful feedback.

Whole Bean and Ground Options

Whole bean offers the most control and generally protects aroma longer. Choose a ground option only when it matches the brewer named in the selector. Pre-ground espresso cannot be matched perfectly to every basket, dose and machine, so whole bean is preferable when precise dialing is important.

Great Service! It has been a few months since I purchased my machine, but I absolutely love it. Initially I had some issues with damage from shipping, but Joe took care of it immediately so there were no problems. He also stayed on the phone with me for a long time the day I received my machine so I could get everything working properly. I highly recommend!
