African Espresso Roast: Ethiopia and Burundi Coffee Blend

African Espresso Roast is a 12-ounce specialty Arabica coffee blend created from fully traceable, sustainably grown coffees from Ethiopia and Burundi. It combines the bright, aromatic qualities associated with East African coffee with a rich, dense body designed to perform beautifully as espresso.

Air roasted in Atlanta, Georgia, this blend develops sweet chocolate-bourbon aroma, earthy depth, berry florals, and a lively finish. It is formulated to produce a thriving crema while remaining expressive enough for pour-over, AeroPress, drip coffee, iced coffee, and milk-based espresso drinks. Choose whole bean for maximum control and freshness or ground for everyday convenience.

What Does African Espresso Roast Taste Like?

This East African espresso blend balances sweetness, body, and aromatic complexity. Chocolate-like sweetness and an earthy foundation give the shot structure, while berry and floral notes add lift. The result is bold enough to remain present in a cappuccino or latte without losing the distinctive brightness of Ethiopian and Burundi coffee.

  • Aroma: Sweet chocolate with berry and floral accents
  • Flavor: Chocolate-bourbon sweetness and earthy depth
  • Body: Dense and satisfying
  • Finish: Bright, aromatic, and clean
  • Espresso performance: Designed for abundant crema and balanced extraction

Why Blend Ethiopian and Burundi Coffee?

Ethiopia and Burundi are both celebrated East African coffee origins, but they contribute different strengths to a blend. Ethiopian coffee can bring vivid aromatics, fruit, and floral character, while Burundi coffee can add sweetness, structure, and a clean, balanced middle. Together they create an espresso that is expressive without becoming thin or sharply acidic.

This makes African Espresso Roast a strong choice for coffee drinkers who want more origin character than a traditional dark espresso blend but still want enough body for milk drinks and concentrated brewing.

How to Brew African Espresso Roast

Espresso

Begin with 18 grams of coffee and a yield of approximately 36–42 grams in 25–32 seconds. If the shot tastes sharp, grind finer or extend the yield slightly. If it tastes dry or bitter, grind coarser or shorten the extraction. Use the recipe as a starting point because every grinder and espresso machine behaves differently.

Cappuccino and Latte

The blend's chocolate sweetness and dense body work well with steamed milk. A double shot in a cappuccino will emphasize cocoa and berry character, while a larger latte produces a softer, sweeter cup.

Pour-Over

Use a medium-fine grind, a 1:16 coffee-to-water ratio, and water near 195–205°F. A controlled pour highlights the berry florals and bright East African character.

AeroPress

Start with 16–17 grams of coffee and 230–250 grams of water. A shorter concentrated brew emphasizes body; a longer, more diluted recipe emphasizes aromatic clarity.

Iced Coffee

Brew the coffee slightly stronger than usual and serve over ice, or replace part of the brewing water with ice in the serving vessel. Its chocolate, berry, and floral profile remains distinctive when chilled.

Whole Bean or Ground?

Select whole bean if you own a burr grinder and want to dial in espresso or switch among brewing methods. Grinding immediately before brewing helps preserve aroma and crema. Explore our home coffee grinders for espresso and filter-coffee options.

Select ground when convenience is the priority. Store the bag sealed in a cool, dry, dark location and minimize exposure to heat, moisture, and air.

Who Should Choose This East African Espresso?

  • Espresso drinkers who want sweetness, crema, and origin character
  • Fans of Ethiopian and Burundi coffee
  • Home baristas who alternate between straight shots and milk drinks
  • Coffee drinkers who enjoy chocolate, berry, floral, and earthy flavors
  • Anyone seeking one coffee for both hot espresso and iced coffee
