The Turin SD40S is a legacy single-dose grinder, while the standard OXO Brew conical burr grinder emphasizes a hopper, grounds container and simple timer. The practical choice is between handling each weighed dose separately and preparing a convenient portion for your usual brewer.
This article covers OXO’s standard conical burr grinder documented in the 8717000 manual. The newer Compact and other OXO models have different specifications.

Correcting the model mix-up
The OXO manufacturer manual describes a 0–30-second timer, numbered grind settings and a stainless grounds container. It should not be assigned a glass hopper or the controls of another grinder. Likewise, the SD40S does not use the SK40’s side worm-drive adjustment merely because their names and burr sizes are similar.
Filter coffee is a natural workflow difference
A timed hopper grinder is useful when you make a pot of drip coffee or a familiar French press recipe. Set the grind, check the output weight and adjust the timer to the amount needed. The SD40S favors weighing beans first, which is handy for small doses and coffee rotation but adds a measuring step before each grind.
Espresso needs more than a fine label
OXO’s manual includes espresso in its suggested range, but suitability for a particular non-pressurized basket also depends on adjustment resolution and the coffee. If espresso is the main purpose, prioritize a grinder with documented fine control and test it with the intended basket. Avoid assuming that a general-purpose range guarantees easy dialing for every espresso style.
Keep the dose and coffee path consistent
Weigh output after changing beans or grind size. Grounds remaining in the chute can affect the next dose even when a timer repeats precisely. On the SD40S, use a consistent bellows technique. On the OXO, follow the manual’s cleaning and cooling guidance and avoid overfilling the collection container. Unplug before accessing the burr area.
Which should you choose now?
The SD40S is not currently an active Espresso Outlet offering, so check condition and support carefully if buying used. Choose the standard OXO when its hopper-and-timer routine fits your filter brewing. For a current single-dose espresso option, compare the SK40 or DF54 rather than deciding from an old SD40S price.
