DF64 Gen 2 Stepless Adjustment

The DF64 Gen 2 is stepless: its adjustment collar moves continuously rather than locking into preset clicks. That gives you room to make very small espresso changes. The printed scale helps you return to a reference position, but its numbers are not universal grind sizes.
What stepless adjustment changes
An espresso puck creates resistance to water flow. With dose, preparation and yield held steady, a small grind change can make a large difference to extraction time. A stepless collar lets you choose positions between the printed marks instead of having to compensate for a fixed step by changing your recipe.
Start with a measured recipe
Use a dose appropriate for your basket and a target beverage yield. Brew once, record the time and taste, then make a modest adjustment. Grind finer when an otherwise consistent shot runs too quickly and lacks extraction; grind coarser when flow is excessively restricted. Correct uneven distribution or channeling before assuming the setting is the only problem.
Make adjustments without forcing the mechanism
Follow the direction markings and instructions on your unit. When moving finer with coffee in the burrs, follow the manufacturer’s running-adjustment procedure so trapped beans do not resist the change. Keep hands clear of the inlet and outlet. Never tighten to burr contact as a brewing setting, force a stiff collar or continue if you hear scraping.
Record useful reference positions
Write down the coffee, roast date, dose, yield and dial position. A photo of the pointer is often clearer than a rounded number. After cleaning, reassembly or a burr swap, recheck your starting range: the relationship between the printed zero and the actual gap can change. Another owner’s number is only a rough reference.
Switching to filter and back
Record the espresso position before making a larger change. Clear retained coffee using the normal routine and verify the next dose. When returning to espresso, allow for a small correction rather than expecting the first shot to be identical. Coffee aging and differences in feeding or puck preparation can affect the result even if the pointer returns to the same mark.
Choose the right control for your routine
Stepless adjustment is most useful when you want to refine espresso precisely. It requires a little more record-keeping than clicking to a numbered stop.
