DF64 Gen 2 Beginner Guide

Updated September 9, 2026.

The DF64 Gen 2 has simple controls, but it does not automatically choose your espresso grind or measure the dose. It suits beginners willing to use a scale and make small adjustments. You can learn the routine with the supplied burrs; an aftermarket burr set or alignment project is not a prerequisite.

Before the first dose

Confirm that the grinder’s voltage matches the outlet and read the instructions supplied with your revision. Place it on a stable, dry counter with the dosing cup under the outlet. Check that all user-removable parts are fitted correctly. The current DF64 Gen 2 listing shows the supplied components, which can differ from older demonstration videos.

Build a repeatable routine

Weigh one dose of beans, set the grind within a safe espresso range, start the grinder and feed coffee as instructed. Let the beans finish grinding, use the bellows in a controlled way and weigh the grounds collected. Transfer them to a correctly sized basket, distribute evenly and tamp level. Keep the cup aligned so grounds land inside it.

Dial in one variable at a time

For an 18g basket, 18g of coffee and roughly 36g of espresso can be a useful starting recipe—not a rule for every coffee or basket. Record the time and taste. With dose and yield held constant, a very fast, thin shot usually calls for a finer grind; a shot that barely flows usually calls for coarser grinding. Make a small change and repeat before adjusting temperature or several recipe variables.

What you notice What to check first
Shot barely flows Grind too fine, excessive dose or restricted basket
Shot gushes or sprays Grind too coarse or uneven puck preparation
Output weight is short Beans remaining above the inlet, cup placement or chute buildup
Grounds cling around the outlet Chute and ionizer cleanliness; room humidity

What the dial numbers mean

Numbers are reference positions, not universal recipes. Burr installation and calibration vary, so another owner’s setting may not suit your grinder. Never tighten the burrs into contact to copy a number. Our stepless adjustment guide explains how to make and record changes.

Is single dosing right for you?

Weighing beans makes it easy to change coffee or prepare decaf, but it adds a step to each drink. Someone who wants to press one button for the same blend every morning may prefer a hopper grinder. If you enjoy learning the recipe, the DF64 gives you useful control without requiring a complicated interface. Keep routine cleaning part of that habit rather than waiting for a blockage.
