My Coffee Cart Journey

The Coffee Cart Buildout

In 2022, we began our journey building out our mobile coffee cart. At first we did not know if we wanted to build a cart or buy a pre-assembled cart from Simple Cart Systems or other companies. Starting out any business can be expensive and cutting costs anywhere can make a big difference. With having little to no building experience, we decided to build out our own cart. When building out any cart you want to spend a lot of time on the design, as workflow is a big deal when serving events. This will make or break the time it will take you to get your end product out to the customer. We were lucky enough to know someone that does have building experience and he helped us tremendously on the build of the cart. Below are some of the progress photos of the cart buildout.

The completion of the cart took about 2 weeks working almost everyday for 4 hours a day after work. Something like this does take time and effort but it feels so good to have done it all yourself. You take pride in building out your cart and having a unique look that some may not have when they purchase an already built cart. Some competitors charge anywhere from $4,000-7,000 for a customized cart. I built my cart for roughly $700-900.

After completing the cart we had our upcoming event and there was just one big hiccup that we did not think of.... How were we going to fit this in our truck to transport it from event to event? Well we could not find a good solution for our very first event so we had to make the best of what we had. Although we were bummed that we worked so hard to meet this deadline before our first event and could not make it work. The show must go on and you learn from previous events. Below are pictures on how we made it work. We had to build our own pitcher rinser and drainage system that would temporarily fit in the truck.

Completed But Not Stained Pitcher Rinser

This took me about 6 hours to put together but it was a big help knowing that I needed something at my event to be able to rinse out all my cups and pitchers now that we were not going to have our new cart.

How We Plumbed The Pitcher Rinser

Although this looks like an unnecessary build, we now use this at our house in our coffee bar.

Here are some of the pictures from our first event. We were very thankful to be able to use their table for our espresso machine and grinder.

At The Event

On the way to our first event I put my Linea mini in the back seat of my truck and had to hold on to it the whole way to make sure that it did not fall over and ruin or scratch any part of the machine. With this issue, we knew that we needed to build a case for our machine to transport to events safely. I took the machines dimensions and built our box. I also took 5 inch foam and used a turkey cutter to cut the foam to its perfect dimensions.

This made traveling to events much easier. The very last thing we knew we needed was a trailer to now haul our equipment and products that we bring to each event. After days and hours of searching Facebook marketplace, We finally stumbled across the perfect trailer for our business.

Our New Trailer

Starting a business can be a ton of work and very stressful at times, but it is so rewarding. Take everything you learn from previous experiences at events and continue to improve your company one day at a time. I wish you the best of luck on your new journeys and just know that everything happens for a reason. Grow and better yourselves each day and enjoy the journey ahead.
