How to Remove a Filter Basket
To remove a filter basket from a portafilter, first release brew pressure, empty the coffee and let the metal cool. Most removable baskets are held by a spring inside the handle. Use the manufacturer’s basket-removal tool or supported method to lift the basket past that spring.
Lift under the basket lip
- Set the cool portafilter securely on a towel or tamping mat.
- Find the small gap beneath the basket’s rolled rim.
- Insert a suitable removal tool at that gap and gently lever upward.
- Move around the rim if necessary, then lift the loosened basket out.
Some manufacturers show using the rim of a spare basket as a lever. That means lifting beneath the fitted basket’s lip—not placing another basket upside down on top and pressing hard. Avoid knives and tools that can slip, cut your hand or dent the sealing surface.
If the basket will not move
Stop before bending the rim. Dried coffee residue, an unusually tight retaining spring or an incompatible basket can make removal difficult. Clean accessible residue and check the model’s instructions. Do not soak a wooden handle or other sensitive parts to loosen a metal basket.
If the basket has no accessible lip, check whether the portafilter uses a different removal arrangement. Force is not a substitute for identifying the mechanism.
Clean the space underneath
Wash the basket and accessible portafilter surfaces with an approved cleaner, then rinse thoroughly. Inspect the spring and its groove for trapped grounds. Replace a damaged spring with the correct part rather than bending it repeatedly until it feels loose.
Include the shower screen in your cleaning routine, but keep its removal procedure separate from basket removal.
Refit and check
Press the compatible basket evenly into place and check that it is retained securely. If you change basket depth or capacity, reassess dose and puck headspace before brewing. Nominal diameter alone does not establish compatibility with every portafilter.
